Admissions

If you would like your child to attend our school, please see full details of our admission arrangements below.

Admissions to the Main School and Nursery

RECEPTION  APPLICATIONS - APPLY FROM 1ST NOVEMBER AT www.torbay.gov.uk (link is external)

Main School

The School serves the parish of St Mary the Virgin and covers a fairly wide area around the school. A map of the parish is included in the admissions policy below.

Deferred admission for infants

Places are offered to children for admission at the beginning of the September term after the fourth birthday. That is before they reach compulsory school age. Parents have a right to defer the date their child is admitted, or to take the place up part-time, until the child reaches compulsory school age. The place that was offered would be held open for them at the school. Requests are considered on a case by case basis by the headteacher. We encourage parents to discuss deferred or part time admission with us and any other relevant professionals. Places cannot be deferred and held open beyond the beginning of the final term of the school year for which the offer was made. If you decide that admission will be deferred, you must tell us so that we know to hold the place open. Where a parent doesn’t tell us that admission is to be deferred and doesn’t admit the child in September, it is possible that the place will be withdrawn and offered to another child.

Please see our Main School Admissions Policy (download at the bottom of this page)  for full details regarding:

  • School Mission Statement
  • The Admissions Timetable
  • Reception Year Admission
  • Oversubscription Criteria
  • Late Applications
  • Mid Phase Admissions
  • Admission Appeals

Information regarding admission to school can also be found on the Torbay Local Authority website: www.torbay.gov.uk (link is external)

Appeals at the normal round of admissions to Reception will be heard within 40 school days of the deadline for lodging appeals on 14 May 2018.  Where the application was not made in time for a decision to be made on 16 April 2018, they will be heard within that 40 day period or, if that is not possible, within 30 days of the appeal being lodged.  In-year admission appeals must be heard within 30 school days of the appeal being lodged.

Nursery Unit

Our Nursery Unit (attached to the school) provides for children between the ages of 3 and 5. We can accommodate 26 children at any one time.  Children will attend for half-day sessions, making a maximum of 52 half time places available. We can accommodate up to 26 children per morning or afternoon session.  Children can be admitted the term following their third birthday (September, January, April) according to the arrangements and allocation of places in our Nursery Admissions Policy (see link below).  All children should be toilet trained before they start (unless there is a medical reason provided by your doctor).

We are able to offer up to 15 funded hours per week.  If parents would like to request sessions over 15 hours these may be available on a paid basis.  A morning or afternoon session is £8 and a lunch session is £4.

We expect that most parents would like their child to progress to the Reception Class and into the main school. However all parents must make an application for a Reception place; places are not allocated automatically even when a child attends our Nursery.  Please refer to the School's Admission Policy (see link below) for further information.

If you would like any more information or would like to make an appointment to look around please contact the School Office on 01803 329070.

Transfer to Secondary Schools

Torbay offers a wide range of Secondary Schools. Parents are required to complete a Local Authority Form to express a secondary school preference when their children start their final year with us (Year 6). At that time, we provide meetings, detailed information and advice, and offer consultations regarding individual children. Please note that some of the local secondary schools select pupils following a series of tests (the 11+) and that St Cuthbert Mayne selects pupils according to the family’s proven church commitment (Roman Catholic or Anglican).

The following local schools are those to which pupils from our school regularly transfer. However, some parents also consider schools in Newton Abbot, Paignton and Teignmouth.

St Cuthbert Mayne School

Torquay Boys’ Grammar School
Torquay Academy The Spires College (previously known as Westlands school)
Torquay Girls’ Grammar School
